Naples Senior Center at JFCS offers eight weekly support groups for individuals with early to mid-stage dementia. Two groups are on Marco Island. Each group meets weekly for four hours.
Caregivers have shared with staff that their family members are benefiting significantly from this program.
“I can’t tell you how fortunate we feel to have found this program…it has been a real blessing.” ~ Mrs. S. about her husband, who regularly attends the program.
The groups provide socialization and wellness with a holistic approach to everyday living and challenges. Language skills, memory techniques, relaxation techniques, socialization and building self- esteem are concentrated on during the group activities with the focus on what strengths the participants possess. The schedule includes Dakim Brain Fitness, which is designed to help users strengthen attention, focus, and concentration. The schedule also includes other concentration and memory activities such as “ice-breakers” during introductions to help enhance social skills and assist in recall and language skills. The last 30 minutes of the day the participants have Music Therapy facilitated by a Board Certified music therapist. This segment has been developed in partnership with the Department of Music Therapy at the Bower School of Music of Florida Gulf Coast University. The groups also offer art therapy led by a licensed art therapist.
